More than any other country, perhaps, India has entered the legal outsourcing arena in a big way.
And not without reason. With its excellent law offices manned by efficient and well trained lawyers, and with English being spoken fluently all over the country there is no compromise in the quality of work done. Besides, without a doubt it is far cheaper.
Even thought the LPO or legal process outsourcing work is performed in India it can still be managed by a reputable American firm, thus ensuring quality and accountability.
Many of the top Indian law graduates and experienced lawyers have been trained in the United States itself or are trained and supervised by top American attorneys. Because of this close involvement of licensed Western attorneys in the legal outsourcing work, clients in the U.S. can rest assured that their work will still be of the highest standards.
Outsourcing legal work to India proffers savings of up to 50% and sometimes even more.
In his “Corporate America Sending More Legal Work to Bombay,” March 14, 2004, the President of the American Bar Association, Dennis Archer, had this to say: “The need to cut costs reaches across many departments, so it should be no surprise that it goes to the legal department as well.”
Not only are the differences in salaries between employees of the countries substantial, so is the cost of real estate. It is far cheaper setting up a state of the art office in India than renting office space somewhere in America.
Also, because of the cost effectiveness of getting legal work done in India, contrary to the American practice of cutting staff, a firm in India is able to maintain a larger work force and thus get more work done sooner without sending expenses through the roof.
Then again, there are ‘time’ advantages to outsourcing legal work to India. While American lawyers wind down for the day, Indian lawyers get busy at the start of their day, one day ahead of America!
And, as if a respectable legal firm would choose to do otherwise, legal outsourcing to India is permissible by America’s ethical rules.
The issue of legal outsourcing to India has been addressed and given the nod, because, as the experts say, although an Indian lawyer may not be permitted to practice law by an American state, the presence and joint effort by the American lawyer makes it effective.
